SMP Overthinking

Overthinking is one of the most common mental habits people struggle with, yet it often goes unnoticed because it feels like “just thinking harder.” Psychologically, overthinking is a form of mental looping; the mind tries to solve a problem by replaying it, but instead of finding clarity, it creates more stress. Research suggests that rumination activates the brain’s threat system, making us feel like something is wrong even when nothing has changed externally.

One helpful shift is learning to recognise when thinking stops being productive. A good rule of thumb: if your thoughts are repeating rather than progressing, you’re no longer problem‑solving. Techniques like grounding, journaling, or setting a “worry window” can help break the cycle. Overthinking isn’t a personality flaw; it’s a habit the brain learns, and with awareness, it can learn a calmer pattern too.
