Why We Replay Conversations in Our Head

Ever walk away from a conversation and immediately start replaying it? This happens because the brain is wired to analyse social interactions; it’s part of how we maintain relationships and avoid mistakes.

But when replaying becomes obsessive, it’s usually tied to self‑criticism or fear of judgment. A helpful shift is to ask: “Is this helping me grow, or am I punishing myself?” Most of the time, the other person has already moved on.
