The Psychology of First Impressions

First impressions form in seconds, long before we consciously evaluate someone. Our brains are wired to make quick judgments based on facial expressions, posture, tone, and even micro‑behaviours. This rapid assessment once helped humans detect threats, but today it can lead to snap judgments that aren’t always accurate.

What’s interesting is how sticky first impressions are. Once we form an initial opinion, confirmation bias kicks in; we notice information that supports our view and overlook what contradicts it.

The good news is that awareness helps. When meeting someone new, try pausing before deciding who they are. And if you’re worried about the impression you make, focus less on perfection and more on authenticity. People remember how you made them feel far more than what you said.
